On or about September 29, 2015, Axel Springer SE announced a binding agreement to buy approximately 88 percent of New York-based Business Insider. The company’s press release is still posted. It quotes CEO Mathias Döpfner: the deal continues a strategy to expand digital reach and invest in digital journalism in English-speaking regions. Henry Blodget is quoted remaining as founder and CEO. Those are the company’s words.
CNN Money the same day reported the price as $343 million for 88 percent, a valuation of $442 million, and an existing Axel Springer stake of about 9 percent. CNN also reported Döpfner calling the purchase his company’s “first big step into the English-speaking world” on a conference call. That is labeled reporting. The press release governs the Fact of the deal.
Business Insider later restated the math as about 97 percent Axel Springer with a remaining slice held by Jeff Bezos’s investment arm. Ownership later rebranded toward “Insider.” Percentages move. The 2015 announcement is the documented U.S. foothold before Politico.
